My teaching and research interests fall within three areas of the field of psychology: social, environmental, and quantitative psychology. Broadly, I’m interested in topics such as attitudes and persuasion, social influence, human-environment interactions, environmental problems, individual differences in personality, stereotypes and academic performance, and issues related to statistical modeling and research methodology. I’m also interested in issues related to pedagogy and student learning, philosophy of science, and interdisciplinary perspectives on social behavior. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, skiing, and exploring the many amazing landscapes of Utah and the western United States.

Dr. Behrens was trained as a counseling psychologist. Her research focuses on treatment outcomes and clinical best practices. She is a research scientist for the Outdoor Behavioral Health Industry Cooperative http://obhrc.org/research-scientists/ellen-behrens and the Research Committee of the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs http://natsap.org/research/natsap-standing-research-committee/. She has worked with teenagers and families as a therapist and clinical director in outpatient, inpatient, and residential settings.

Trained as a counseling psychologist with a minor in social psychology, Dr. Seong-In Choi has a strong interest in approaching mental health issues from socio-cultural perspectives. Specifically, her areas of interest include multicultural and diversity issues in counseling and psychology, cross-cultural comparison, help-seeking attitudes among underserved populations. She is also interested in scale development, test and measurement, and quantitative research methodology.

A cognitive psychologist, Dr. Presson studies human judgment and perceptions of personal control. His interests include how people's beliefs influence their decision-making, especially perception of the role of luck in probability judgments. In his current position, Dr. Presson directs institutional research examining higher education and improving student learning outcomes.

Dr. Sandor is a counseling psychologist who specializes in psychoanalytic and object relations theory and practice. Dr. Sandor's teaches classes in counseling methods, substance abuse treatment and group therapy. She specializes in treating substance abuse disorders, couples, and gay and lesbian clients as well as works as a psychoanalyst in training.

Dr. Simonds was trained in developmental and personality psychology. Her primary research interests are in temperament (the biological foundation of personality), specifically extraversion, reward sensitivity and attention/effortful control. Dr. Simonds also does work in measurement theory and practice.

Dr. Smith is a developmental psychologist whose training focused on preschoolers, parenting, and attachment theory. Her current interests include emerging adulthood, issues in the transition to college, and successful learning strategies in college. In her current position, Dr. Smith directs the first-year program at Westminster.

Janine Wanlass, Ph.D. is a professor of psychology and counseling at Westminster College, where she has taught for over twenty years. In 2010, she won the Gore Excellence in Teaching Award, an honor bestowed to one faculty member each year by the collective faculty of Westminster College. She was the founding director of the Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling Program at Westminster. Drawing from a scientist-practitioner model, she mentors, teaches, supervises, and guides emerging counselors in the mental health field, sharing her passion and enjoyment in the art of psychotherapy. Dr. Wanlass is a psychologist and psychoanalyst practicing in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she treats children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. Her clinical expertise is in the treatment of people struggling with traumatic life events, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety. Dr. Wanlass is a graduate member and teaching faculty of the International Institute of Psychoanalytic Training. She chairs the Child, Couple, and Family Program and serves as a national faculty member for the International Psychotherapy Institute in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Her most recent publication, The Intergenerational and Cultural Transmission of Trauma, focuses on her work with couple psychotherapy training in China and appears in Karnac’s Journal of Couple and Family Psychoanalysis. Her research interests include applications of object relations theory to clinical practice, psychoanalytic process and outcome research, interpersonal, Intergenerational, and cultural trauma,play therapy, psychoanalytic couple and family therapy, and the use of technology in psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, and supervision.
